3D Scans of Perth

SUMMARY

This artistic flythrough is made entirely from 3D scans of spaces and objects within Perth.

The scans were performed over a series of months and combined in CAD to create a continuous sequence of new spaces and experiences.

STORY

What began as an exploration of the 3d scanning technology turned into an artistic project I became deeply passionate and excited about.

The completed artistic flythrough presents a closed loop and compression of the process of visiting Perth Western Australia. The distortion of scale is intended to make the viewer feel as though they could navigate any of the doorways and find themselves in a completely different environment or ‘microworld’.

At the end of the animation the last scaling doorway offers the viewer a choice of infinite further exploration or returning to the origin of the journey.

This work prompts the viewer to consider the concept of choice, the paths chosen, their regressive loops and the novel opportunities that present…a theme which is hopefully relatable but profound for myself.

Within the video I have hidden artworks, social commentary and new meaning from the existing objects and spaces. Some of these works are only revealed when the animation is paused.

The original works are the time and energy of hundreds of creative people, so my goal was to respect their original intent by not disassembling the objects but rather recontextualizing them and adding additional meaning and metaphor.

I would be eager to credit/tag anyone whose work is included.

THE BIOMES

All the objects have retained their original scale and proportions between the scaling thresholds.

Between each of these specific doorways I have generally tried to create a homogenous looking environment or biome based on the designation at the place doorway kickboard. Ie The kings park biome contains object predominantly from this area, but supplemented with objects from other parts of Perth.
